Sunflower Seedlings!

16:27 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

Happy Earth Day! ♻

Today we celebrated Earth Day at school by planting some lovely sunflower seeds... in recycled applesauce and yogurt containers! For the next couple weeks we'll be able to watch nature at its best, creating new life! So exciting!!!
Here's a great quote, perfect for Earth day (and which satisfies the sci-fi nerd in me)!

"There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew." - Marshall McLuhan
Wanna try? You'll need some sunflower seeds, recycled plastic containers
(yogurt or applesauce) and come potting soil! Simply fill the small cups
with soil and insert a sunflower seed about 2 cm deep! Place in a sunny
spot..... and voilà look at science do its thing!

*Tip: punch holes with a nail at the bottom of the cups to get adequate draining and avoid root rot.

Hopefully they'll look like this soon! I'll update in a couple weeks!

UPDATE! 1 week later! hooray!

We even grew tomato plants too!

It's a Tea Party!

09:14 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

Hi there!

It has just occurred to me that I've never shared an important part of my craftiness with you! My performance art! Although it's slowed down a little (I was part of a performance collective after graduating art school) I still try to make it to festival and events when I can! I like to explore ideas of Identity, traditional women’s craft, community and DIY culture, all within today's consumerist society.

I wanted to share a special performance I did for Cornucopia in Westboro, for my birthday! I threw myself a tea party (2 years in a row), Alice-in-Wonderland Style - an over the top, exuberant, fabulous and extravagant giant birthday tea party! I invited strangers to celebrate with me, complete with treats, decorations, crafts and surprises for the whole family! I was amazing transforming a usually private celebration into a public event, connecting with many people I had never met before!

 April showers bring May flowers

Have you ever heard the saying "April showers bring May flowers"? Well at school this week, we decided to tell the kids this one and our Mots du jour (Words of the Day) all had to do with rain and Spring.... So why not finish the week with a fun rainy craft?!

Here's my inspiration, made out of felt
This one's made of felt, but we decided to do ours with cardboard and construction paper instead!

What you'll need:
        ☂ white cardstock (thick cardboard)
        ☂ colourful construction paper
        ☂ yarn
        ☂ hot glue
        ☂ scissors
        ☂ colouring pencils
        ☂ hole puncher

How to do it:
❶ Cut out a cloud in the thick white cardboard (i made a stencil for the students). ❷ Cut out colourful raindrops in the construction paper (Teachers: you can even incorporate math and make patterns with the colours!) ❸ Punch holes (3-4) in the bottom of the cloud and attach long strands of yarn. ❹ Hot glue the raindrops onto the yarn. ❺ Decorate the cloud! Add a face or some colour! ❻ Punch a hole on top, add a string and display you beautiful mobile in a window!

So cute! who needs curtains?!

Happy Spring everybody! xo

Today is a very exciting day! After having my best friend Lolo's beautiful art in my apartment for a whole week (shipped all the way from Toronto!), I get to bring them to the Manx Pub, where she will have an art show for the whole month of April! I even got to help out by making a little framed biography! So cute! Hourra!

Here's a little sneak peak! Oh and if you live an Ottawa... go see it!

Oh and check out her adorable blog, Sincerely, Lolo
