A Little Birdy Told Me...

19:29 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

....Spring is here!

Hurray! This beautiful Saturday's been feeling a lot like spring, so I decided to dig through my crafts repertoire and found a fun Spring craft: a kitschy spring wreath! Why not? You can use a bunch of fun materials from the dollar store or your local craft store: birds, butterflies, flowers.... whatever you can get your hands on and simply glue them on a plain wreath!

Happy Saturday!

I must confess that I did get my inspiration from Martha Stewart's (her crafts are AMAZING!) Spring Grapevine Wreath. Isn't it adorable!?

Decorated Button Pushpins!

11:01 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

I recently purchased a bulletin board to keep up with all the little things I need to do and I was disappointed with the boring pushpins I found at the store.

So I thought...."why not make fun decorated pushpins myself!?"

Here's a little easy to do craft (seriously it takes minutes!) to make your own button pushpins!

enjoy!

xo Natalie

What you'll need: metal pushpins,
buttons, super glue
This one's SUPER easy... Simply glue the buttons
on the pushpins, let them dry, and voilà!
make a whole munch in a couple minutes!

***Take it a step further if you want! Use some fabric-covered buttons (use a button-covering kit )and make buttons with fun fabric! so pretty!

Sock puppets!

18:06 Natalie Karine 2 Comments

Have some lonely socks that lost their twin? Don't know what to do with them? Recycle them into sock puppets! A couple weeks ago we did this super fun craft at school with socks, yarn, googly eyes and a bunch of felt! (although it was really hard for the younger ones to cut into the felt.. I would recommend this craft for ages 7 and up)

I found some cool sock puppet blogs, like this one or this one, to inspire me, but it ended up that the kids had some (awesome) ideas of their own! The creative juices were flowing that day!Check out the creations down below! AMAZING!

a white kitty cat!
a magical unicorn!
a fierce dragon!
a scary vampire bat!
Wow! Look at all the puppets!

Fabric Book Covers!

Book covers! Wanna make a beautiful gift? or cover up an old book? Or maybe read an embrassing book on the bus!? Well then why not a beautiful and simple book cover! Oh and the best part? It takes about 15 minutes!

In that pile of books over there on the left, there's a paperback book, a hardcover AND a note book (great gift!). It works for all books! I followed the tutorial in the Liberty Home Sewing Book, but I found this super cute tutorial online, that's practically the same!

Sewing supplies:
                       ◦ fabric*
                       ◦ thread
                       ◦ sewing machine
                       ◦ (and a book of course!)

* to determine the size of your rectangular piece that will serve as the slip cover, you need to mesure your book!
height = height of book, plus 1½in for hems
width = four times width of the front cover.

Simply follow this tutorial

and voila! Happy Sunday!

Ooooh! So pretty!

Birds On a String!

17:21 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

Want a good way to add some colour and life to a classroom?! Decorate it with mobiles! At school, we hang them in the widows in lieu of curtains! I wish you could see how beautiful it makes our class! And the kids love them!

We even managed to link it with our new artist of the month for March, Robert Rauschenberg, inspiring ourselves from his abstract/collage techniques!

Wanna make one?!

    What you'll need:
          ✂ white glue
          ✂ various patterned papers
          ✂ old newpapers
          ✂ white cardstock
          ✂ pastels
          ✂ scissors + whole punch
          ✂ paintbrushes
          ✂ yarn

To make this mobile, cut out a simple bird silhouette from cardstock. Apply glue and paste small
pieces of paper randomly, covering the bird. After 3 or 4, make a small whole in the head and
string them on a piece of yarn (and don't forget to make little knots)!
Some collage tips:
✂ Use a paintbrush to spread white glue! You can even add a layer on top!
✂ Use bits of recycled paper, tissue paper, wrapping paper... whatever!
✂ Use torn up pieces of newspaper!
✂ Draw with pastels at the end to add even more texture!
Who needs curtains when you have these lovely mobiles!?

Also, it dawned on me as I was reflecting on my day of bird mobiles and yoga (with 4 year olds... so adorable- they have NO balance hah!) that I'm so darn lucky to hang out with these adorable cheerful little munchkins all day! I've started to make a gratitude list every night of things i'm grateful for that happened during the day... Today's list includes some tiny little hugs, hilarious new made up yoga moves, a stranger opening a door for me while I was carrying groceries and some shared laughter at work. It helps so much, especially when you're feeling blue or having a rough day....What are you grateful for?
