Skeptically painting

If you don't know who James Randi is... you should! "In addition to an international reputation as a magician and escape artist, today he is best known as the world's most tireless investigator and demystifier of paranormal and pseudoscientific claims."

CFI Ottawa (Center for Inquiry)  has organized a special lecture with Mister James Randi on September 28th at Library and Archives... that's tomorrow! Hooray!

So you might be wondering how this ties into my crafty blog?! Well last winter, I made some paintings/portraits of famous Skeptics for a super fan! Here they are! James Randi's up there in pink!!!

Dawkins, Hitchens, Harris, Dennett
Michael Shermer
Neil deGrasse Tyson

Reindeer pom-pom!

Today was a little bit of a sad day for me, as I handed in a letter of resignation at the Gallery, where I've been an animator/interpreter/guide for over 5 years.

It was such a fabulous job, and helped spark my passion for education and children!

Now I'm pursuing a career in teaching!!! So I thought I'd share some art projects there were done during some fun shifts at Artissimo! ♡
Abstract fun!

The Perfect Little Pouch!

14:38 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

The perfect little gift...... and it takes about 30 min-45 min to sew!

I found this wonderful book: Sew What bags!
It's filled with so many great projects (all bags of course), like these little zippered clutches/pouches that are so versatile! They are also great gifts! The brown one you see was for my friend Chelsea and she ♡s it!

If you don't want to purchase this book...here is a great tutorial I found on-line for zippered pouches! (Just scroll past the part where they show you how to iron-on a Bible verse! hah!) It's even good for beginner sewers!! woo hoo!

For a little extra fancy touch, you can add funky vintage images! I love to print images onto iron-on transfers from Staples (like those kitty cats up there!) and add them to my creations!

Apples!

14:57 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

Tomorrow we are celebrating the fall equinox at school! Hooray! Here is an adorable (and easy-peasy!) craft to highlight the first day of this wonderful season!! Simply cut out an apple (you can make stencils for the kids to trace) and decorate! I decided to sponge-paint with tempera, but you could draw or use collage if you want less of a mess!

.... but WAIT A MINUTE! and who's that little guy that got in there!? ;)

Happy First day of Fall everyone!

There are 7 days in the week!

08:54 Natalie Karine 1 Comments

The classroom I work in needed a calendar.... So I sewed one up with a scrap piece of yellow fabric! The grid was done with the surger option in my sewing machine and the words are iron-on transfers printed from my computer!! Youpi!

You can sing along if you like! (in the tune of Oh! my Darling Clementine)
There are 7 days, there are 7 days,
There are 7 days in the week:
Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday!

or in French! simply translate to  Il y a sept jours dans une semaine!

Happy wednesday everybody!

"à la Jackson Pollock"

08:50 Natalie Karine 0 Comments

I work in a preschool, and September's artist of the month was Jackson Pollock! All the kids got to draw, throw, sprinkle and pour paint on a 20 square foot sheet of canvas! They each got to bring home a piece of it afterwards! Hooray! It was a success! (If you ever do this project... do it outside! It was SUPER MESSY, but extra fun!)

Garlands, Pompoms and Martha Stewart

Some handmade decorations a made for my friend Andrea's 30th birthday this summer! The little flags were done using biased tape and scraps of fabric cut into triangle (use pinking shears). The big tissue paper "pom-poms" where taken from Martha Stewart's (heh) tutorial Tissue Paper Pom-Pom's How-to! It was a lovely party... and the decorations now hang permanently in my friend Lolo's dinning room! ♥

Baby fever

I found a fabulous book, One Yard Wonders, full of projects to do when you only have scraps of fabric left! It's so fabulous. So I decided to venture in the book's baby section and make some gifts for a friend's little one! She loved all the projects! Here are some bibs, a bear pillow and my favorite.... tiny flag garlands! I even have a picture of them in the new baby's room!
